Things to know

  • Stay Length Reduced: The visa-free stay period is 30 days (cut down from the previous 60-day scheme).
  • Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): You must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online.
  • Crucial Warning: Use only the Official TDAC Portal because the form is 100% free. Avoid scam/imitation websites that charge heavy fees (ranging from 500 to 5,000 INR).
  • Proof of Funds (Random vs. Real): Officially, you are expected to carry proof of funds equivalent to 20,000 THB per person (or 40,000 THB per family) in cash or foreign currency. While many travelers sail through without a check, Reddit travelers heavily note that immigration can spot-check—especially on self-transfer itineraries or budget/backpacker routes.
  • Onward Journey & Return Tickets: Immigration officers are much stricter about checking your return or onward flight ticket leaving Thailand within the 30-day window than they are about cash.
  • Crackdown on Visa Runs: Immigration is actively cracking down on people abusing visa-free entries to live long-term in Thailand via back-to-back "visa runs" (popping out to a neighboring country and immediately re-entering). Doing multiple consecutive visa-free entries can lead to secondary questioning or outright denial of entry at the discretion of the officer on duty.
  • Extensions Inside Thailand: A visa-free stamp can typically be extended for an additional 30 days by visiting a local Thai Immigration office and paying the standard extension fee.
