Things to know
- Biometrics Appointment: The official processing clock does not start when you submit your online application or pay online. It starts only after you visit a VFS Global centre in India to submit your fingerprints and photograph (biometrics).
- Flight & Hotel Bookings Warning: UKVI does not legally mandate confirmed or paid-for flight/hotel tickets during the application stage. In fact, Travellers heavily warn against buying non-refundable tickets upfront. Fully cancellable or dummy/held reservations are safer, though some applicants successfully submit paid ones at their own risk.
- Proof of Funds & Balance Quirks: Simply having a massive lump-sum deposit right before applying triggers red flags. Traveller consensus emphasizes 6 months of consistent, organic bank statements showing steady salary/income credits rather than sudden large cash deposits. Aim for liquid savings matching or exceeding your planned budget (e.g., ~INR 6.5 lakhs or ~£2,000 for a short trip, or roughly 2 to 3 times the estimated trip cost).
- The "Ties to India" Proof": The #1 reason for refusal is failing the "Genuine Intent" or home-ties test. Beyond an employer's Leave Sanction / No Objection Certificate (NOC), Travellers strongly advise submitting a rent agreement, property papers, or proof of family/dependents left behind to prove you are legally and socially compelled to return to India.
- Cover Letter Strategy: Do not write a generic cover letter. A well-received tip on Reddit is to treat your cover letter as a "roadmap" for the Entry Clearance Officer (ECO): explicitly break down your purpose of visit, detailed day-by-day itinerary, exact funding breakdown, employment background, and a clear list of every single document uploaded.
- No Routine Interview: UK Standard Visitor Visas generally do not require an in-person interview. A decision is made based on the documents you upload and submit. An interview is only called for in rare or complex cases where officers need further clarification.
- Interviews Can Happen (Online/Phone): While traditionally rare for tourism, recent traveller timelines note that the British High Commission occasionally conducts virtual/online interviews (via Microsoft Teams or phone calls) to verify your travel intent and background. Be thoroughly familiar with your own cover letter and itinerary.
- VFS Self-Upload vs. Center Scanning: Most applicants scan and self-upload all their documents to the VFS/UKVI portal beforehand, meaning your appointment at the VFS center is usually just for biometrics and photo capture (taking under 20–30 minutes if paperwork is organized). Double-check file size and legibility before uploading.
