Things to know

Visa Payment & Currency Realities
While visa prices are quoted in Euros and US Dollars, navigating the payment desk requires strategy.
• Cash vs. Card: Travellers strongly recommend carrying physical cash (Euros or USD). The airport card terminals frequently face connectivity issues or process electronic transactions exclusively in local Ariary at poor exchange rates.
• Change Policy: Bring exact or small denominations. Standard airport procedures mean if you pay for a €20–€30 visa with a large bill, your change will almost certainly be returned to you in local Malagasy Ariary (MGA) instead of foreign currency.
• Customs Bribes: A common user discussion point on forums warns that first-time travelers sometimes encounter baggage handlers or custom agents hinting at "light bribes" ($5–$10) to pass through customs smoothly. Firm politeness or ignoring the request usually suffices.

The 90-Day Cap & In-Country Extensions
Understanding the duration rules is crucial to avoid dynamic legal issues or being turned away at immigration.
• The 90-Day Absolute Limit: Tourism visas are capped at a maximum of 90 days. If you intend to stay longer than 3 months, you cannot do so on a tourist track; you must apply for a long-term visa at the nearest embassy beforehand.
• The "Visa Run" Alternative: As discussed by travellers, if you want to extend your stay past 90 days without an embassy visa, you must leave the country. Popular, quick flights include Reunion Island, Mauritius, South Africa, or Nairobi to reset your tourist status.
• Extending an e-Visa: If you arrive on a 30-day or 60-day e-visa, you can extend it up to the 90-day threshold at a local immigration office. This requires 80,000 Ariary (~₹1,700), 3 identity photos, proof of accommodation (or a legalized host certificate), and currency exchange receipts.

Critical Medical & Entry Triggers
Immigration officers can deny entry or visa issuance if specific health prerequisites are missing.
• Yellow Fever Requirement: If your flight transits through a Yellow Fever endemic zone (such as Kenya or Ethiopia) for more than 12 hours, you must present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate upon arrival.
• Malaria & Health Advisories: Though not a visa document, the CDC warns that anti-malarial medication is heavily recommended for almost all regions. Ensure your travel health history is sorted before facing health screeners at the airport.
• Return Ticket Enforcement: Airlines flying into Antananarivo are notoriously strict about checking your confirmed return air ticket before letting you board in India. Dummy tickets are highly risky here.
