Things to know
- The Risk of Double Payment: Suggested to skip the online eVisa completely and choosing Visa on Arrival (VoA). Many users report that Tanzania’s official eVisa portal suffers from unpredictable processing times, often taking months or never generating a confirmation before departure. When this happens, travelers are forced to pay another $50 USD for a VoA at the airport, essentially losing their initial application fee.
- The Airport Reality: The physical VoA lines at major hubs like Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro move relatively quickly.
- Pristine USD Cash is Mandatory: If you choose Visa on Arrival, you must pay the $50 USD fee. However, Tanzanian banks and immigration officers will reject any US dollar bills printed before 2013, or bills that have even minor tears, ink marks, or heavy folds. Bring crisp, clean, newly printed bills
- Yellow Fever Vaccine: Tanzania strictly enforces a mandatory Yellow Fever vaccination certificate for all travelers arriving directly from or transiting through India. You must receive this vaccine at least 10 days prior to your arrival and lack of proof can lead to entry denial or forced quarantine/vaccination at the airport.
- Prohibited Items: Tanzania has an incredibly aggressive ban on single-use plastic carrier bags. Standard zip-lock bags for toiletries are generally tolerated, but regular plastic shopping bags inside your luggage will be confiscated at customs and can carry steep on-the-spot fines.
- Drone Laws: Do not pack a drone expecting to take casual safari footage. Drones are heavily restricted and will be impounded at the border if you do not possess an advance government permit.
