Things to know
Visa Options and Costs
• Tourist eVisa (Type T): Single-entry online visa costing $30 plus a $6 processing fee ($36 total). Valid for 3 months with a maximum stay of 30 days.
• Visa on Arrival (VOA): Available at major international airports (like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap) and select border checkpoints for $30.
• Processing Time: Online eVisas usually take 3 working days.
• e-Arrival Card: A mandatory electronic travel and health declaration filled out online within 7 days before arriving.
- Proof of Cash ($500 Rule): Officially, immigration or even airline check-in staff at departure may ask for $500 USD in cash as proof of funds per person, alongside your return ticket and hotel bookings. While not checked 100% of the time, carrying the cash or having a backup is heavily recommended to avoid airline/airport stress.
- Cash advice: A local said - "In Cambodia, we use dual currencies alternatively. US Dollars and Khmer Riels are accepted in anywhere. BUT you have to be extremely careful about US dollars because if it is torn, stained or faded, no one will accept it from you here. So before coming here or when you are here, receiving changes in dollars, please double check the notes. While Khmer Riels are always accepted even torn a little. If you are exchanging dollars to riels in Cambodia through money changer, please remember or take a photo of your note before handing out. They might trick you by swapping with a fake note & accuse you of giving fake one. Most people won’t try to scam you but it’s better to be cautious cause there are always people that want to take advantage of tourists."
- Visa Fee Payment Methods: If getting a Visa on Arrival, cash in USD ($30) is preferred or card acceptance can sometimes be glitchy at certain counters. Having crisp US dollar bills (without tears or heavy folds) is safer.
- Mandatory e-Arrival Card: You must complete the electronic arrival/health declaration card online within 7 days before your arrival. Do not skip this; fill it out before boarding your flight.
- eVisa vs. Visa on Arrival: Getting an eVisa in advance can let you skip the physical queue at the visa counter, though the VoA line at airports like Siem Reap and Phnom Penh is generally quick (15–45 minutes).
- Family / Group Sponsorship: If traveling as a family, a single sponsor’s bank statement can work for eVisa/VoA documentation if paired with a clear letter stating they are covering the trip expenses.
- Tourist vs. Long-Stay (E-class): A standard tourist visa is strictly 30 days, single-entry (extendable once for another 30 days). If you are staying longer or working/interning, you need an Ordinary (E-class) visa.
- Printed Copies: According to traveller consensus, digital copies of your hotel reservations and return tickets are accepted, but hardcopy printouts prevent delays if internet or device battery issues happen at immigration.
- Visa Extensions: A standard tourist visa is valid for 30 days and can be extended once inside Cambodia for an additional 30 days. Long-term or work stays require an Ordinary (E-class) visa. Extensions must be applied in-person through the General Department of Immigration at Phnom Penh International Airport
